Where’s My Luggage?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

I just got to NYC, and it seems US Airways forgot to bring my luggage. I asked them if they knew where my bag was, and to my surprise, they did. Even more surprising is that it hadn’t moved at all during my cross-country flight. Of course, this kind of situation is relatively uncommon.

One thing I have noticed through this is that on a rare occasion where it is important that my luggage arrives on time, it doesn’t. I will be meeting (networking) with a bunch of people at an event tonight, and doing some light speaking.

User Interaction vs. Length of Visit

Monday, September 24th, 2007

This is more obvious than it is profound, but I decided to post it merely by relevance. Several weeks ago, I debuted the Crappy Graphs user submission tool. Since then, the tool has been used to post hundreds of graphs. These user submitted graphs have since attributed to about 100,000 views on the site.

When you browse user submitted graphs, you can feel that they were drawn by different people. This factor helps lower the barrier to interaction. The effect is just like displaying 20 comments after a blog post. New visitors can see all these voices and feel more of an urge to chime in.

With Crappy Graphs, visitors feel this effect and click around. They submit. All in all, this site is seeing a significant increase in visit length and page views per visit.

Cornering the Search Market for “Crappy”

Friday, August 24th, 2007

“Crappy” is probably not a very highly sought after search term in the SEO world. That is part of what makes Crappy Graphs so appealing. We are slowly but steadily cornering the market for searches queries with the word “Crappy”.

One fundamental contributor to this campaign’s success is YOU, the user-contributor. The Crappy Graphs team consists of only a few hundred people. However, harnessing the power and reach of our tens of millions of faithful fans, we can dominate the Crappy sector of the internet.

All you have to do is submit an awesome Crappy Graph (or a few dozen, as long as they’re each spectacular). Then, talk about it. Show your friends. Spread the good word. The good word about Crappy Graphs will inevitably fall upon the all-seeing eye of Google, and thus bolster our PageRank for the term!

Coolness vs. Fan Participation

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

I decided to let Crappy Graphs subscribers get the first kick at the tires of an upcoming Crappy Graphs section. First, here is a crappy graph that shows why I think fan participation is so important:

I will integrate the section into the site (that’s Fancy English for “I’ll drop a link in the side bar”) in a day or two and start promoting it. For now, it’s my treat to you! Let me know if you find any bugs or major annoyances.
